An introspective study of a family's emotional problems in mist-wreathed Chongqing in central China, "Bliss" is hardly bathed in joy. (Original title means the much more apt "Floating Lives.") Debut 35mm feature by mainlander Sheng Zhimin, a former line producer for Hong Kong director Fruit Chan.

Retired cop Lao Li (He Xingquan) lives with his second wife Xiu'e (Guan Jiangge) and her grown son, delinquent Xiaolei (Xu Tao). Li's own son, cab driver Jianjun (Liao Zhong), has just married Xiaohong (Wang Lan), who's been laid off at work, straining their relationship. Then, Li's first wife's ashes come into his life, and he spends much of the film looking for a fitting site where he can bury them. Meanwhile, Li gets his stepson Xiaolei a job on the cross-river cable car, where the kid meets a pretty out-of-towner, Qian Xue (He Qin). Fashionably downbeat and loaded with anomie, pic captures the dank feel of the city but is otherwise a remote intellectual exercise.
