Bene’s debut film NOSTRA SIGNORA DEI TURCHI (OUR LADY OF THE TURKS) is one of his signature achievements. The subject was ostensibly the 1480 invasion of Bene’s childhood home Otranto, when the Turkish fleet massacred 800 of the inhabitants, but I admittedly had difficulty discerning any such conception. There’s nothing resembling a narrative, linear or otherwise, with only Bene’s eye-popping pictorial sense—one as stunning as that of any filmmaker since D.W. Griffith—binding together this phantasmagoric swirl of light and sound.

Our Lady of the Turks" is a film that is hard to categorize. Then again Carmelo Bene's films are hard to define. Often beautiful, sometimes boring, somewhat ego-centric and sometimes bitingly humorous. The film starts off as a sort of mocumentary about Ontranto, Italy. This is where the Turks tried to invade 100 years before; killing the Saracens. Then we are treated to Bene in front of the camera in a series of bizarre, surreal images and comical mishaps. Bene's character is taunted by the Madonna. Wherever he goes this beautiful virgin Mary is sure to follow, making his life a real headache. She is symbolic of man's desire and dreams. This is a film where visuals overpower story or lack there of. At first I didn't know how to feel about the film. But to be honest, it was quite a journey with it's bizarre experimental style. Somewhat frustrating but altogether breathtaking. There's simply nothing like it. If you enjoy Fellini or even experimental films by Stan Brakhage; you may find this film interesting.

The film shows Peter Sellers as a demented genius, not having a personality of his own. It glimpses his life as a family man and as an actor. According to the film, Sellers was not excited about landing a role in Pink Panther films, as the Clouseau character was only offered to him after Peter Ustinov turned it down. Also, it upset him that Clouseau was only a minor character, with David Niven's character getting the bulk of the attention. Sellers' performance impressed Blake Edwards, though, and Clouseau was made the central character in the hugely successful sequels. The Pink Panther films are only a small part of this docudramedy, however, as it spans Sellers' career from The Goon Show through Being There. Much emphasis is put on the fact that Being There (which earned him an Oscar nomination) was the one film about which Sellers was truly passionate since it was an opportunity to show off his skills as an actor as opposed to simply a comedian (he also reportedly greatly identified with the main character). Sellers is also shown aspiring to be a leading man in the James Bond satire Casino Royale which prompts ridicule from the film's crew.

His first film "La demoiselle et le violoncelliste" won the Grand Prix at the Festival of Annecy on 1965. Fifteen years later he was awarded the Palm d'Or at Cannes for "La traversée de l'Atlantique à la rame". He has produced some of the most exquisitely rendered animation in all of Europe: Laguionie’s animation examines familiar myths and uses fairy tale narratives to explore the differences between reality and illusion. Critically acclaimed and award winning, his work has been described as a kinetic combination of “naïf painting and René Magritte.”

Joseph Rouletabille is haunted by the memory of a woman who used to visit him when he was at boarding school many years ago. Beautiful violin virtuoso Camille has two obsessions: the music of Ravel, and a friend of her husband’s who crafts violins. But his heart seems to be as cold as her playing is passionate.

The plot revolves around the ‘love triangle’ of Camille, Stephan, and Maxine. Camille is a young up and coming concert violinist, and Stephan and Maxine are violin craftsmen. Camille is one of their many clients. The main character of this film, Stephan–played by Daniel Auteuil–is brilliant. He is a good looking and quiet man who knows what he wants and is secure in this: solitude–regardless of the amorous advances of Camille, the beautiful and brilliant young violinist who winds up dating his business partner Maxime, and whom he could seduce very easily. Many people analyzing Stephan’s character would immediately say that he is sociopathic, deranged, insecure, or whatever. But Stephan is actually fully in control of his life throughout the whole film. He is not aware of fleeting passions like infatuation because he does not exist outside of passion: He is passion incarnate as he is very in tune with what he wants and is skillful at asserting his desires; so much so that those who encounter him become very jarred. His personna functions as a mirror that reflects other people’s neuroses and fears back at them instead of absorbing them into itself and thus becoming poisoned. In this way, he’s almost like a freelance mobile psychoanalyst passing through different bistros and concert halls in Paris, and disrupting the otherwise ‘normal’ relationships of those he encounters. The psychological tension throughout the film is thick from the start, and reaches a point of absolute saturation at its apogee. The viewer cannot help but find himself emotionally invested in the plot. The background score of the film is beautiful.
