SYNOPSIS
The wife of Nasim, an Afghan immigrant in Iran, is gravely ill. He needs money to pay for her care, but his day labor digging wells does not pay enough. A friend connects Nasim to a two-bit promoter who sells tickets to watch Nasim ride a bicycle continuously for a week. The promoter brings in sick and aged spectators, haranguing them to find hope in Nasim's strength. Aided by his son, who feeds him as he rides, Nasim grinds out the days and shivering nights. Local officials believe this may be a plot and Nasim may be a spy; they try to sabotage him as do those who bet he won't finish the week. Will desperation alone get Nasim the money? Is any triumph an illusion?

Forbidden Adventure in Angkor (1937) L.C. Cook, George M. Merrick

Forbidden Adventure in Angkor (1937) aka Angkor

Genre: Documentary | Proto Mondo
Director: L.C. Cook & George M. Merrick
Country: USA
Language: English
Subtitles: none
Aspect Ratio: 1.49:1
Length: 81mn
File: Dvdrip Xvid Avi - 716x480 - 1.00gb

Description:
Distributed by Dwain Esper, the notorious madman behind MANIAC and MARIHUANA, FORBIDDEN ADVENTURE, better known as ANGKOR, is an incredible hodge-podge of stock footage, National Geographic travelogue scenes, and inserted topless shots of L.A. prostitutes being harassed by a guy in an ape suit. The film’s story begins with a meeting of the Los Angeles Adventurers’ Club, a fictional group if there ever was one, who proceed to screen a film put together with footage shot by two explorers, who later died in the first World War. The men reportedly ventured into Cambodia in 1911 and returned in 1914, and the producers edited all their footage together into a feature film. After spending time in a local village, they hire guides to help them trek into the jungle to find the forbidden city of Angkor, where an ancient treasure resides and its million inhabitants mysteriously disappeared. Along the way they encounter killer crocodiles, playful monkeys, natives performing fire rituals, an insane Buddhist claiming to be the reincarnated king of Angkor (!), giant monitor lizards and pythons, and a vicious tiger fight. Once they reach the lost city, they find the ruins inhabited by bloodthirsty bats, a regal peacock (huh?), a killer cobra, and a giant ape that proceeds to have its way with the explorers’ female guides!

This haphazardly-created travelogue is like Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom with tits. Substitute Marlin Perkins and Jim Fowler for the no-name actors in fuzzy fake beards here, and you'd have a craven carbon copy of that nature-loving nonsense. Using lots of topless gals, a series of white hunter safari slaughter scenes(***), and a healthy dose of noticeable rear projection, this scientific expedition to the lost city of Angkor is just an excuse to see semi-clad gals getting down with dudes in ape suits. Indeed, the main premise of the movie has a pair of scholars searching for the legendary locale in order to prove out their theory that a once-great civilization was horribly undermined by an unnatural desire for monkey lovin'. Using a series of frescoes and some incredibly crappy reenactments, our narrating guide concludes that the women of Angkor, under the sway of a slave in a gorilla disguise, were taught the forbidden ways of simian sensuality. You know what they say—once you go ape, there's really no escape.

The native girls here were rumored to be prostitutes from a regional brothel who got angry when filmmakers demanded they work past their allotted $10 time limit. When people started questioning the film's authenticity, roadshow regular Dwayne Esper (who had acquired the film) made sure that the narrative indicated that there were some factual recreations and truth-twisting involved. The sense of seriousness is further muffled by the random insertion of superimposed foliage over the naked naughty bits. In order to avoid censorship complaints, big black silhouettes of ferns and grass were created to cover-up our jungle gal's corporeal coconuts. Unfortunately, all this faked fauna did was turn Forbidden Adventure into a perverted peek-a-boo game. One can just imagine the members of the raincoat crowd squinting and shifting to get a good glimpse of what is barely blocked out to begin with. It turns an otherwise nominal exploitation entry into something stunningly surreal.

Musique au poing [Music Is the Weapon] (1982) - Jean-Jacques Flori, Stéphane Tchalgadjieff

User Review on IMDB:
This is a great documentary that serves as a brilliant introduction not only to the amazingly funky rhythm's of Fela's contribution to music i.e. Afro-Beat, but also to the ragged state of African Politics.
Fela was a brilliant musician but in addition to this he offered a vision of a new Nigeria that was free of totalitarian control and promoted an African identity free from western influence.
The doc. itself is well put together and features some exciting performances live from Fela's club which is worth the admission price alone.

Niin lähellä, niin kaukana (Until the Summer Ends) (2003) - Janne Heinonen

Image

A story about a friendship, love and the last summer together. Four high school graduates have to start thinking about their lives, relationships and future before the summer ends.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0347659/

IMDB Comment: I had an opportunity to see the film at a Finnish film festival "Kettupäivät" last month, and I just had to comment on it, when I noticed that it was listed here at IMDB, and learned from the film's website that it will be released on DVD.

The movie was very beautiful and the story was very well told. It had believable characters and filmmakers managed to touch the viewer with their storytelling. Even though this is a student film, it doesn't seem like one. It can be compared with any "real" film in Finland nowadays, and that was nice to notice.

"Niin lähellä, niin kaukana" is full of heart and nostalgia. The film has very warm atmosphere and you really start to care about the characters. You realize you miss them when the film ends, and that is a good sign. I especially liked the leading actress Sari Tero who played Jenni in the film, she was casted successfully. Teemu Lehtilä as her father was also very believable, at his best really.

What can I say more.. Sure it has it's weaknesses but it really isn't hard to get over them. Very well directed and cinematographed short film with great music and landscapes. A beautiful little film about nothing more than life and relationships, as simple as that.

This is made with heart. Recommended.

Everyday Life in a Syrian Village (1976) - Omar Amiralay

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0233175/

Country: Syria
Language: Arabic

Orignial Uploader Comment:

I found this extraordinary film on Cinema Obscura, and noticed KG doesn't have any of this director's work. After watching three minutes of the first scene, which is of a group of children burying a camel skeleton with handfuls of sand, and then three minutes of the next which is of the lesson given to the village school by a party educated teacher about the peasants' new combine harvester, you know this is one of the most penetrating documentaries you will have ever seen,.... I offer it to you whole, the description which follows is also taken direct from Cinema Obscura

"I post this noticing a bit of an absence of quality Arab films up on CO. This is an absolutely extraordinary piece of work by the (in my view) most important, surprising, and talented filmmaker to come out of the Middle East (I know that’s a bold claim – check his work out before you scoff…).

His work is notoriously hard to find (its all banned in Syria and only rarely appears at retrospectives and festivals internationally). I have a few of the most exciting films and if this up attracts attention and enough people seem to be interested I can upload these and maybe some more great Syrian stuff in due course.

For now – his first feature documentary: Everyday Life in a Syrian Village. The film is, on the face of it, a realist doc which does what it says on the tin; it assembles gorgeously edited scenes of daily life in a remote agricultural community on the eastern desert border with Iraq. This in itself is a treat – the softly shifting landscapes and haunting sandstorms, contemplative shots of people of all ages and trades at work in a remarkable setting, and some extraordinary intimate footage of religious rituals and practices.

But under the surface (and some of this may or may not be lost on those unfamiliar with the basic trajectories of Syrian political history) is a much larger project – and a much more incendiary one; one that continues to characterise all Amiralay’s work. The film subtly, but bitingly, interrogates the state regime and its attempts to bring an order and new frame of organisation to organic and rich Syrian ways of life. Never using voice-over, Amiralay does this through stinging juxtapositions – for instance, he cuts instantly from an incredible scene showing the traditional Shi’ite Ashura ritual celebrations (hypnotic music, trances, speaking in tongues…) to a scene where the local party official for culture presents a travelling program of educational-film-screenings to the village who look blank or bemused as they are instructed about culture by men in suits. In other scenes, party-education curricula compels the teacher to instruct tent-dwelling pupils on bathing practices and optimal personal hygiene.

If you are interested in political cinema and the Middle East, I cannot recommend this film enough; Amiralay is a master filmmaker (who trained in France rather than Moscow, where most of his compatriot filmmakers got their trade) and his satirical genius blows me away every time. As I said, I want to see if this attracts interest and if people are into it – I have a bucket more of his and other Syrian stuff which can follow.

NB – quick note on the titles : the original print had embedded French subtitles, this version has an opaque black matte over these with the English overlaid. The translation is decent, coming from the Arabic, not via the French."

Hokusai manga (Edo Porn) (1981) - Kaneto Shindô

4380914_edo-porn.jpg

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0202908/

This is a biographical film which follows the struggles of Edo-era artist Hokusai from his poorest beginnings to his famed accomplishments, including his notorious libidinous drawings. Though risque in much of what is depicts, this comes across as a straight-forward jidai-geki (historical piece) exploring a well-known historical figure's life and obsessions...

Despite the intriguing English title given this film, Edo Porn is in fact a historical biography of Edo-era artist Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849). Hokusai is one of the most well-known Ukiyo-e artists, whose works combine woodblock printing, colored inks, and a very stylized depiction of landscapes and characters. The Japanese title of this film is Hokusai Manga, which is the name of the 13 volume sketchbook he published around 1814. This work, and his very well-received collection of woodblock prints entitled Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (Fugaku Sanjuurokkei) gained him widespread fame while he was alive and even greater renown by subsequent generations.
A subset of the drawings contained in the Hokusai Manga were shunga depicting the extremely amorous exploits between lovers in various revealing poses. Thus shunga were in essence the pornography of the Edo-era, an artistic tradition Hokusai thoroughly immersed himself in. One particularly infamous/notorious theme pursued by Hokusai was of an orgasmic woman being erotically overcome by a large tentacled octopus. It probably would not take much effort to suggest that Hokusai is here the grand-daddy of all contemporary tentacle hentai, but that particular discussion would lead us far far down an entirely different path.

 Review:
The film covers the career of Hokusai, starting with his very poor and drunken beginnings through his key successes, eventual fame and last years of life. It covers his creative struggles with his major accomplishments, including the Manga, his time spent drawing Mount Fuji, and of course the Amorous Octopus. But the narrative also goes well beyond these obvious biographical elements and includes many other artistic accomplishments and personal relationships.
Human relationships covered herein include that between Hokusai and his daughter who stood beside him throughout the entirety of his life. The troublesome dynamic between he and his father is also depicted, including his father's suicide. And Hokusai's fascination and obsession with the strikingly beautiful model Onae also adds plenty of intrique and inner turmoil to the plot.
But clearly the most profound and important relation explored is that between Hokusai and Kyokutei Bakin [1767–1848] a personal friend of Hokutai's who would go on to become Japan's first professional writer. Kyokutai is the author of the epic 106 volume Nanso Satomi Hakkenden or "Legend of the Eight Dog Samurais". This amazing contiguous tale follows the brave and honorable exploits of eight brothers of samurai rank as they roam throughout the country encountering various challenges. The tale has been readapted many times for contemporary audiences including the 1990 and 1993 anime series The Hakkenden and Kinji Fukasaku's 1983 film Legend of the Eight Samurai.
The Japanese public and history in general remember Hokusai in a highly favorable light, and here, despite his hedonistic fixations (which dominate this film's storyline) he emerges as a very noble and disciplined individual exemplifying the highly preferred qualities of tenacity and utter dedication to one's work...

Shokaran (Hemlock) (2000) - Behruz Afkhami

Plot: In the Spring of 1995, troubled factory owner Mahmoud worries about the financial state of his business. Then his partner Khakpour is seriously injured in a mysterious accident. Visiting Khakpour in the hospital, Mahmoud meets attractive Sima. Even though he is happily married, Mahmoud is drawn to Sima and visits her daily. But Islamic society forbids their affair unless they arrange for a temporary marriage. Mahmoud decides to temporarily marry Sima. After some time, Mahmoud tries to break their affair off, but Sima refuses to let him go.

Review: This drama from Iran offers a glimpse into an aspect of Middle Eastern culture and society that is little known (or understood) by most Americans. Mahmoud (Fariborz Arab-Nia) lives in a small town in Iran, where he's happily married to Taraneh (Rozita Gharfari), a dutiful wife who looks after his needs and comforts. However, Taraneh is about the only thing that's going right in Mahmoud's life lately; the factory he owns is in severe financial straits, and his business partner Khakpour (Hamid Reza Afshar) has been seriously injured in an auto accident in Tehran, several hours away from their hometown. Mahmoud is visiting Khakpour in the hospital when he meets a beautiful woman named Sima (Hedieh Tehrani); while Mahmoud makes it clear to her that he's a happily married man, Sima makes no secret of her interest in him, and as he spends more and more time looking after Khakpour, he finds himself frequently crossing Sima's path. Unable to ward off temptation any longer, Mahmoud agrees to a "temporary marriage" with Sima, an Iranian formality that allows men to sleep with other women without violating the culture's strict taboos against extramarital affairs. While Mahmoud tries to make clear that their relationship is indeed temporary, with a clearly delineated expiration date, Sima is not so willing to give him up, and her obsession with Mahmoud soon has unfortunate consequences. Shokaran was a major box-office success in Iran, and is one of the few adult-themed melodramas from Iran to find its way to American screens. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

His brother turns a blind eye to his philandering although, with a broken marriage behind him, he doesn't have a clear conscience, either. Is there anything positive to be said about infidelity, or does it simply deserve the utmost contempt, particularly when it's more premeditated than spontaneous?

SYNOPSIS
There are so many film festivals in Korea that it's difficult to stand out. But the Jeonju International Film Festival has weathered the competition in the past decade, thanks to its unwavering focus on promising filmmakers and their digital projects.
In 2000, the festival introduced its first Digital Project as a core event, focusing on the future of digital movies. Since then, 27 filmmakers from around the world have joined the project, producing digital short films. What's notable is the organizers' attempt to broaden horizons, featuring European and African filmmakers in 2007 and 2008.
This year, however, the Jeonju Digital Project ("Visitors") has returned to Asian filmmakers to celebrate its 10th anniversary.

Jeonju Digital Project 2009:
"Lost in the Mountains" is directed by Hong Sang-soo, "Koma" by Naomi Kawase and "Butterflies Have No Memories" by Lav Diaz

In the film "Koma", Kawase explores the relationship between fragile and often tense history between Korea and Japan through the relationship that develops between a third generation Korean-Japanese man, who unexpectedly visits the small and quiet village of Koma, and a Japanese woman, a somewhat mysterious inhabitant of the village.
Korean director Hong's "Lost in the Mountains" tells the story of a woman's love-hate relationship with the people closest to her, including a friend, a teacher with whom she had an affair and her ex-boyfriend. It starts when she makes an impromptu visit to see her friend, who lives in Jeonju.
"Butterflies Have No Memories", the film by the director Diaz, depicts the lives of the inhabitants of a remote island far from the Philippines who suffer economic difficulties after a gold mining company withdraws from the town. One day, a sudden visit by a Canadian woman born and raised on the island makes their already troubled lives even more complicated.

The Afterman (1985) Rob Van Eyck

The Afterman (1985)

Genre: Thriller | PostNuke
Director: Rob Van Eyck
Country: Belgium
Language: No dialogue
Subtitles: No Need
Aspect Ratio: 1.49:1
Length: 81mn
File: Dvdrip H264 Avi - 680x456 - 942mb

Description:
"The Afterman" is about a guy who lived alone in an atomic fallout shelter after the A-Bomb was dropped,so he can't read, write or speak. 20 years later the shelter opens and he wanders into a barbaric world full of sex and depravity. The film is done completely without dialogue and it offers some wall-to-wall sleaze including graphic nudity, homosexual rape and forced blow-job.

"The Afterman" is a Belgian post-apocalyptic thriller, but even in its own country of release (which is really small) it only received a minimal distribution and finding a decent copy on VHS is about as rare as encountering a salsa-dancing elephant. Fortunately – or unfortunately if you wish – there are not many people on the lookout for this film and that's mainly either because they don't know it exists or because the reputation of writer/director Rob Van Eyck isn't exactly favorable around here. His most famous film "Blue Belgium", inspired by the infamous Mark Dutroux pedophilia scandal, is generally considered as one of the worst Belgian movies ever and doesn't really stimulate viewers to check out the director's other works. Too bad, actually, since "The Afterman" is a truly special and deeply intriguing cinematic experiment, accomplished with an absolute minimum of financial means yet with a massive amount of controversial themes and downright shocking ideas in the screenplay. The rudimentary plot outline is somewhat reminiscent to "The Omega Man", with a sole man trying to stay alive in a post-nuclear wasteland and the constant threat of other bewildered survivors trying to take advantage of him or even to kill him. Only the concepts of the two films are similar, as the elaboration of "The Afterman" is completely different. There's no dialog in the film and – mostly due to budgetary restrictions – no use of special effects or impressively staged action sequences whatsoever. At the beginning of the film, the nameless main character is still safely entrenched in a nuclear bomb shelter. He has been there since the bomb, or whatever caused the apocalypse, and fills his days eating maggots and making love to a frozen female cadaver. When a short circuit forces him to leave the hideout he's initially enthusiast to learn he's not the only remaining human being left on the planet, but he quickly learns that it's every man for himself now. His first encounter with a group of drifters results in a painful male rape scene, and perverse sexual satisfaction remains the leitmotiv throughout the entire movie. The man subsequently encounters a murderous lesbian millionaire, a couple of farmers that keep a girl locked up in a cage, a sect of fellatio-practicing monks and a sleazy type of society that imprisons women and throws food and sex orgies. The girl that the man freed following a deadly encounter with the farmers stays with him and a strange relationship develops between them, exclusively revolving on – you guessed it – sexual intercourse.

La Belle Bête (The Beautiful Beast) (2006) Karim Hussain

La Belle Bête (2006) aka The Beautiful Beast

Genre: Drama
Director: Karim Hussain
Country: Canada
Language: French
Subtitles: English (.srt file)
Aspect Ratio: Cinemascope 2.35:1
Length: 110mn
File: Dvdrip Divx Avi - 720x304 - 23fps - 1.40gb

Starring:
Carole Laure ... Louise

Description:
La Belle Bête is a powerful study of the conflict between beauty and ugliness, hate and love. The story revolves around three main characters. At the center, Patrice, a beautiful but mindless youth stands gazing at his image in the water. Around him move his ugly sister Isabelle-Marie, and his frivolous mother Louise, the first lost in love and hate for her brother's beauty, the second seeing it as an adornment for herself. Into this small, obsessed universe come a blind boy and an elegant fop from the outside world. At once, the pattern breaks and events move forward into a terrifying denouement.

Director Karim Hussain's LA BELLE BETE, adapted from a book by acclaimed novelist Marie- Claire Blais, feels like a great Louis Malle or Eric Rohmer film from the 1970's that somehow slipped through the cracks. Austere and pared-to-the-bone, both visually and emotionally, the story focuses on the insanely-screwed up relationship between an aging (but still sexy) mother, her oddball daughter, and the beautiful man/boy of a son that they both long to possess and control. Suffice to say this is NOT Norman Rockwell's vision of a happy family. Terrific performances all around in three very difficult roles aided by Hussain's carefully calibrated direction and cinematography (he also served as DP on the film.) A dense, poetic and emotionally harrowing film, this one is well worth the effort.

Description:
Portrait of contemporary Spanish youth culture, "tuning" cars, racing, video games, texting, sex... Juani and her friend leave their homes to look for a better life in Madrid.

"I like the accuracy of this film, the plot is not completely fresh or inventive but the portrayal of life in 2006 as a Spanish youth is. Some films transcend time, sometimes time transcends a film. "Yo Soy La Juani" reminds me of "Valley of the Dolls," I have no idea what it was like to be alive in 1968 but after "Valley of the Dolls" I was able to peer at life then through the voice of the film and the fashion/aesthetics of the set. Though the rawness and honesty in this film are not very shocking in 2010, this film is reminiscent of the 1995 film "Kids." You get to see what young kids do and the issues they are forced to deal with. If you're looking for a life changing experience this movie is not for you, however, if you want a glimpse into what it's like to be in your early twenties in this part of the world, this movie is great. Aspect Ratio: Widescreen 1.85:1
Length: 77mn (Uncut)
File: Dvdrip Mkv - 1024x574 - 1.40gb

Description:
A mute woman gets raped twice coming home from work and decides to take matters into her own hands. She dresses suggestively and roams the streets alone, reaking vengeance upon anyone who tries to take advantage of her. Eventually her secret life spills over into her regular life in the fashion industry.

The 1970s were THE decade for American exploitation movies with the likes of Roger Corman, Jack Hill, and Larry Cohen Jr creating some of the most entertaining trash ever made. For the most part the 1980s were a big let down in this department. Porkys-like sex comedies and awful buddy action movies and the like generally failed to reach the heights of the glory days of A.I.P. There were a few exceptions ('Chained Heat', 'Maniac' and 'The Exterminator' immediately spring to mind), and 'Ms.45 ' (a.k.a. 'Angel Of Vengeance') is in my mind THE single best exploitation movie of the decade. Abel Ferrara, who later made brilliant movies like 'Bad Lieutenant' and 'The Funeral', had previously made a porno movie and the infamous "video nasty" 'The Driller Killer' before this, which could well be the best rape revenge movie ever made. Ferrara's genius touch was the casting of the late Zoe Tamerlis. She is stunningly beautiful and her face is very expressive. Making her character mute makes the movie an unforgettable experience. It's really difficult trying to "sell" this stunning movie to someone. You'll either love it or you just won't "get it". I think it works very well as a post-'Death Wish' vigilante movie, but just as 'The Driller Killer' is more than "just" a slasher, this movie has a lot more to it, and that is almost completely down to Zoe Tamerlis. 'Ms. 45' might be b-grade trash to many, but it is uncompromised, something you very rarely see these days. I think it stands alongside 'Repo Man', 'Videodrome', 'Blue Velvet', 'The Evil Dead', 'The Ninth Configuration', 'Raising Arizona' and 'The King Of Comedy' as one of the most extraordinary movies released in a decade dominated by mediocre popcorn movies forced on viewers by Spielberg, Lucas, Hughes, Bruckheimer and Simpson.

Good music from AR Rehman, and decent performances by the entire cast, especially Kartik's boss Ganesh, who becomes an unwitting sidekick in Kartik's clandestine stalking of Jessie. The film is a bit slow in the second half, but cleanly shot, well-written, and with several funny and tense moments.

Ken (1964) - Kenji Misumi

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0366668/

Among his 60-odd productions, Ken is Misumi's only film in contemporary setting. Although it falls outside the genre programmers he habitually worked in, it tellingly treats exactly the same theme as his period pieces: the conflict between bushido and humanism.

Based on the novella by Yukio Mishima (who allegedly was a great fan of Destiny's Son), Ken is the story of Jiro Kokubu (Ichikawa), star pupil of the university kendo club, for whom the sport is a way of life. Unwavering in his asceticism, he willingly foregoes girls, parties and rock music, devoting his entire being to the practice of kendo. The other students, in particular a fellow senior named Kagawa (Kawazu, star of Nagisa Oshima's early films), ridicule him behind his back, but are unable to better him in the dojo. On a training trip before a major tournament, where the group is subjected to Kokubu's gruelling regimen, Kagawa rebels, dragging the younger students with him on a collision course with their captain.

For Mishima, Jiro Kokubu was the embodiment of his ideals, a modern-day Japanese living by the warrior code, renouncing the temptations of hedonism and consumer society. He is the personification of the values the author detailed in his book-length essay Hagakure Nyumon, a study of the Hagakure, the book of the samurai, which the controversial writer considered his guide to life. Misumi takes a more distant look at the same story. Through the eyes of freshman student Mibu, torn between his admiration for his team captain and his wish to live it up before entering the adult world, the director weighs Kokubu's steadfast stoicism instead of idealising it. He adds more balance in the shape of a potential love interest for Kokubu, but with the obvious evil of swords and killing out of the way Misumi finds it far more difficult to come to a conclusion.

Shot in suitably high-contrast black and white, Ken is closer in style and tone to the seishun eiga (at times it evokes Kon Ichikawa's Punishment Room / Shokei no Heya, 1956) and the early works of the Japanese New Wave than to any of Misumi's own chanbara films. An overlooked gem that sheds a very different light on its director. ~review by Tom Mes @Midnight Eye
