Description: About a month after the Holy Week, a major national election will take place. What future does it hold for a motley group of TIRADORS--local slang for petty thieves—whose daily survival depends on fast fingers and yearly atonement on divine grace? The tiradors all live in an old dilapidated tenement building in the slums of QUIAPO, a busy business district of Manila where they ply their trade.

ELMO, 45, a good-natured aging tirador who works with two other accomplices stealing cable wires and snatching wallets, lives with his young son ODIE, 15. Elmo is a devout Black Nazarene devotee and this Good Friday, he joins the vast throng of men celebrating the Black Nazarene feast in Quiapo. He must fight his way in among hard bodies if he wants to touch the miraculous carriage of the saint. But he falls in a ditch and gets trampled upon by scores of running feet, causing him to die of asphyxia.



Elmo’s death hastens his son’s inevitable rite of passage to the world of thievery. Finding himself suddenly orphaned, Odie must come to terms with life. A petty gambler, it is a matter of time before he becomes a petty thief. After Elmo’s burial, Odie joins his father’s partners, and proves to be a competent replacement.

CALOY, 23, lives with his mother ZENY, 45, his younger brother MELO, 17, and his mother’s live-in lover DIEGO, 47, with whom Caloy has a strained relationship. His real father is himself living in with another woman. Caloy tries to earn a decent living by driving a side car which he had bought on installment terms. But unable to collect the money he had lent his estranged father, Caloy defaults on the monthly payments, forcing the owner of the side car to recall it. Diego blames the unfortunate event on Caloy’s father which provokes the younger man to attack his step-father. Intending to hit Caloy with a rock, Diego hits Melo instead, causing the latter’s head to bleed. This stops the fight and Melo is rushed to the hospital.



Angry at the turn of events, Caloy snatches a necklace when the first opportunity presents itself.

REX, 25, a drug-user and a young father, must always contend with the dilemna of buying milk for his baby daughter and funding his vice. Whenever confronted with such a choice, Rex usually chooses the latter, to the constant consternation of his WIFE. Rex must contend too with the hazards of the trade, like being picked up by the authorities during saturation drives and snatching fake necklaces every now and then.



TESS, 25, and her husband REY, 25, are a two-member team specializing in stealing CD players from electronic stores and from sidewalks where the items are openly displayed. It is from the proceeds of a recent stunt that Tess is able to afford to pay for a set of dentures of which she is very proud. Wearing the new dentures does improve her appearance. Imagine her dismay when while brushing her dentures, they slip from her hands and fall into the sink all the way down into the drainage system. Despite Tess’ frantic search, the dentures are never found.



GANI, 18, is the head of a group of young delinquents called “jammers” who employ an elaborate modus in the school area to victimize male students. It is ironic that Gani should be a victim himself of theft but of the romantic kind. It is during Holy Week when he discovers that his GIRLFRIEND is making it out with GREG, 18, one of the jammers. Blinded with jealousy, Gani engages Greg in a fistfight during a basketball game. Greg breaks off with his girlfriend and replaces Greg with another jammer.



Greg and his gang conduct a school operation, applying their usual modus.But this time, the YOUNG VICTIM unexpectedly resists and calls the attention of the school guards who, in turn, call in the police. The gang breaks up and manages to elude arrest. But LEO, 18, is not as fortunate. The police immediately accost Leo and bring him to the police headquarters where the young man is beaten up by one policeman. The policeman stops only when Leo agrees to show him the rest of the loot.

The election day is drawing near and politicians like TAGASA engage in vigorous campaigns and vote-buying sorties among the slum residents. The campaign culminates in a huge prayer rally where real-life senatorial candidates attend and are presented to the public. One by one, the candidates deliver their speech, each one promising a better life for the Filipinos.
