Claude Berri, who usually participates in films by directing them, here returns to the screen as an over-the-hill lothario, much given to quoting Shakespeare, who occasionally goes around naked under his raincoat and exposes himself to strangers, who are usually not interested in his primitive display of genitalia. It also appears that he is unable to sexually satisfy his much younger lover, and he suspects her of having another boyfriend. He earns his living tutoring students (mostly young girls) in English literature. When, in his frustration, he gropes one of the girls in her home during a tutoring session, she protests, her father (who is at home) beats him up, and he is sentenced to a jail term. There, he is teamed up with a slightly loopy murderer. When he gets out of jail, he finds his girlfriend has left for good, and ends his life.

Megnaa Mehtta as Rani

Synopsis

It is interesting to note that in a country that produces nearly a thousand films in a calendar year, most of them with running times over 150 minutes; it was a clever 15 minute feature by a relatively unknown film-maker that made the final list at the Oscar 2005! Writer-editor-director and producer Ashvin Kumar's short 'Little Terrorist' is one of those films that make a point, and a global one at that, without trying to be pretentious. Indeed, there are moments when you think that the film is actually unaware of the emphatic statement that it is making.

Jamal (Julfuqar Ali) is a 10 year old Pakistani boy who unwittingly crosses over into the Indian border while chasing a ball during a game of cricket. Suspected as a terrorist, Jamal is helped, reluctantly at first, by Bhola (Sushil Sharma)- an orthodox Hindu. Bhola gives him shelter and food, and eventually goes out of his way to safely lead the boy back home. It is this victory of humanity over the exterior differences of caste, country and ideology that touches a chord instantly. Aided by some beautiful Rajasthani compositions, Ashvin manages to create a poignant picture of compassion which permeates dissimilarities. Ashvin has a keen eye for noticing humour in pathos, a quality similar to that of Samira Makhmalbaf (Blackboards). The bitter-sweet remedy that Bhola's daughter (Megnaa Mehtta) suggests to hide Jamal's identity from the Indian soldiers or Jamal's private laughter at the climax are some of the humane colours that Ashvin paints against the backdrop of the rustic Rajasthan.

In what is a brilliant marketing idea, Ashvin Kumar has tied with Shyam Shroff of Shringar distributors and has made the film available to a large audience. At various multiplexes the film is being shown at the beginning of the regular shows, at no extra cost. And 'Little Terrorist' deserves to be seen by an audience, especially in the wake of the many terrorist events that have affected nations in the last few years.

Ashvin Kumar mentioned in an interview that 'Little Terrorist' is a portfolio-building film for him. Well suffice to say, look out for his big screen début with Irrfan Khan and Boman Irani!

Note- 'Little Terrorist' was nominated at 2005's Academy Awards for the Best Short Film- Live Action.

After entering the gay world, Ivan meets Windson who professes to be straight. A curious friendship blossoms between the two involving many episodes of nude wrestling, swimming, embracing and sharing a bed. Though apparently attracted to the free-spirited Ivan, Windson insists on limiting their relationship to nothing more than kisses and fondling.
When Windson announces he plans to wed his long-time girlfriend, Ivan is devastated and sets off on a journey of discovery that takes him from Israel to Thailand to Australia and finally back to Hong Kong.
Permanent Residence is flamboyantly out. With the bodies of avid gym-goers, both leads take delight in celebrating their naked, muscular flesh for the audience’s viewing pleasure in full frontal nudity (no erections! And this is not porn!). The gay never-never land is effectively contrasted with the confining world of social norms that force Windson to stay with a woman who expects wedded bliss. The coming out will strike a chord with many Asian audience. Alternating between homoerotica and existential contemplations on life and death, the film is unique and intuitive. The photographic images present a tactile materiality that far exceeds the controlling needs of story, bringing to the natural realm an unexpected poetry and perspective.

Synopsis

A soldier named Keng, meets a young man named Tong in Thailand, the two begin a friendship. Keng makes constant sexual and amorous advances on Tong, who laughs them off, or makes a game out of them. He is never exactly interested, but never fully rebuffs either. The two make trips back and forth from the Jungle where Tong lives and Keng is on patrol with his military unit, to the city. We see the lush silent landscapes and the bustling city life, from dance hall karaoke to the cinema to the solitude of a quiet lake. When Keng finally makes a move in such a way, as to be beyond any doubt of a desire for intimacy (he kisses Tong's hands), Tong responds in turn by doing the same, and then walks into the darkness of the forest. Before Keng, can come to understand, the film takes a drastic turn in tone, style, and mood.

We are told by an interjected 3d person narrator the story of a shaman who is a shape-shifter known to take different animal forms, who used to roam the forest playing tricks on people. One day a cunning hunter, did not fall into a trick and shot him, mid transformation from woman into tiger. The spirit of the shaman was then stuck as half tiger half man and eternally doomed to stalk the forest; tricking and devouring all in it's path.

Keng, is then on patrol in his section of the forest, exploring rumors from villagers, about some "thing" killing cattle and causing general havoc. Alone on patrol in the woods, he becomes plagued by strange sounds, a sense of dread, and images of a naked boy, a tiger, spectral animals, and a glowing phosphorescent tree (which looks as beautiful as those in Aranofsky's "The Fountain"...I have no idea how they got that effect, on their budget, but it's miraculous...).

This second half of the film, of course calls into question our understanding of Keng and Tong's prior relationship (if Tong ever existed at all.). While part one, is reminiscent of a modern quirky love story like "Chungking Express", the second half is like Terrance Mallick shooting a remake of "Predator". All sense of time and space, is swallowed by the jungle, and implicit politics of the first half are turned inside out in the second half; it is literally cat and mouse, with the possibility that the cat may want to be eaten by the mouse, or vice versa.

The second half is also marked by the inclusion of tribal art and cave paintings, depicting the story of the shaman and the soldier, with sub-titles accompanying them. To paraphrase a description by director Weerasethakul it's like "a silent film for the first people on earth". And together with the visual effects, confident cinematography, clever use of editing, music, and sound, and disarming performances, it becomes magical. "Tropical Malady" combines the most modern and ancient notions of fear and desire, and makes something "new" out of them.

This is Thailand's "Solaris", a story of the changing shapes and forms of want and need, of being deceived and allowing yourself to be deceived by them. It's slow pace, forces reflection on questions like what form or body comprises love, is it purely physical or something more, is it perhaps deception itself, a fools errand we invent to forget the savagery of the jungle around us, is it the need to devour or be devoured? There's a Scottish legend called Tam Lin (one of my favorites), long story short, a woman falls in love with a faerie, and discovers he used to be a man, but made a deal with the faeries to serve them if they spared his life, after an accident. Tam tells the women she can restore his humanity and claim him, if when the faeries pass on Halloween night, she will wrap her arms around him and not let go no matter what happens. She does this, and the faeries transform him into all manner of creature, some hot, some cold, some thorny, others slimy, some which bite and claw, etc, but she holds on throughout all his changes, til eventually she finds herself just cradling a man. And the faeries begrudgingly let her keep him, because she held on to what she loved, despite the way it changed with time.

The film opens with these lines, "All of us are by nature wild beasts, our duty as human beings is to become like trainers, who keep their animals in check. And even teach them to perform tasks alien to their bestiality"-Tom Nakajima "Tropical Malady", is a good deal more ambiguous, I suspect more predatory and reflective as well, than Tam Lin, and comes from the opposite side of the world, but like that story manages to peculiarly harmonize emotional sensitivity and mythic scope, into a coherent whole.

I wished I would have paid more attention to Weerasethakul "Mysterious Object At Noon" the first time I had the chance, he has a talent for experimenting with narrative and style that is missing in many films endlessly praised these days. The phrase I kept hearing from other reviews or the one I liked the best was "If Brokeback Mountain, was a mountain on the island from "Lost"...it's callous, with a smidgen of truth, but this is a much better movie than that. It is very slow moving though, the first hour will give you no hint of the second half (other than a few visual ones, look at the various statues in the backgrounds, etc), but for the bold and the patient, there is lush hypnotic reward to be had.

Plot

"A Rainha Diaba" is Antonio Carlos da Fontoura's second film, 6 years (!!) after his critical and box-office hit "Copacabana Me Engana'. Making a total change in theme and visual style, "Rainha..." is about an underworld drug dealer in Rio de Janeiro, called "queen" Diaba (meaning "she-devil" and played by Milton Gonçalves), who happens to be black, gay, powerful, vindictive and extremely violent. As one of Diaba's dealers and special protégé is threatened to be caught by the police, Diaba concocts with sleazy Catitu (Nelson Xavier) a plan to make small-time pimp Bereco (Stepan Nercessian) fall down in his place. But things don't turn out as expected, as treason lurks everywhere around Diaba.

This was one of the first Brazilian films to deal -- in expressionist, non-realistic style -- with then new reality of large-scale organized drug dealing in Rio's favelas, on its way to become the incredibly violent and bloody business it is today. In his candid, must-see interview for the DVD release, Fontoura explains the idea behind "Diaba": every time he smoked a joint he wondered the amount of bloodshed that came with it.

The most remarkable aspect of "Rainha" is its visual treatment: the colors scream, like a Frida Kahlo on acid. José Medeiros' lighting and agile camera-work are stunning, but it's Ângelo de Aquino's hallucinating, jaw-dropping sets and costumes that leave an indelible impression, making early Almodóvar seems conservative by comparison. Fontoura's sure-hand style manages to mix expressionism, hyper-realim and gory violence (be prepared to see gallons of blood throughout) with a stylized depiction of Rio's underworld, thanks to good locations and fine casting choices.

The four stars of the movie are in great shape: Milton Gonçalves' Diaba is rather two-dimensional (he had no time to prepare for his role) but his hopelessly masculine physique helps: it's because he's a dog of a drag queen that his violence and anger seem legitimate. Odete Lara (Fontoura's ex-wife) is still an impressively sexy woman at 45, brave in her fight/sex scene with Bereco and giving it all in her scary torture scene, and she's obviously delighted (so are we) to have the two singing numbers that function as breath-recovering pauses for the audience. Nelson Xavier does his sleazy act wittily, maybe a tad mannered but always avoiding clichés. Most of all, it's Stepan Nercessian who steals our attention, building a living flesh-and-blood character out of Bereco, from small-time pimp to wide-eyed novice crook to trapped mouse in a big game, always managing to making us care for him, even if he's a rotten scumbag.

"Diaba" is thrilling, definitely worth your time for its eye-popping colors, costumes and sets, especially in the sparkling new DVD release.

Synopsis

Homosexuality in the Orthodox community is the subject of a very dark and disturbing film, Eyes Wide Open (Einaym Pkuhot), which premièred at the Toronto International Film Festival. Aaron Fleishman (Zohar Shtrauss) is a father of 4 who takes over the family kosher butcher shop following the death of his father. Aaron's observant world is turned upside down with the arrival of a young Yeshiva student Ezri (Ran Danker). When Aaron and Ezri begin spending time together, Aaron is quickly ostracised within the Orthodox community. Confronted by Rabbi Vaisben (Tzahi Grad), Aaron declares he was dead before meeting Ezri. We see how quickly social control turns violent and ugly in the Orthodox community when Ezri is forced to leave. Eyes Wide Open is set during a dark and wet winter in al-Qods. Rain and the darkness of night are used as metaphors for the ritual of cleansing and the omnipresent pressure to conform in the Orthodox community. It has a strong cast and delivers a powerful message in a country divided by debates about the growing influence of the Orthodox Jewish community.

Plot

Since its release last year, tremendous controversy - all exhaustively detailed by the Moroccan press - swirled around the racy film. With surprising complexity, "Amours Voilées" treated the struggles of Batoul, a contemporary Casablancan woman, to juggle professional ambitions, love interests, and her family's traditions. Whereas such themes, if covered by American cinema, would have been inevitably oversimplified, to my pleasant surprise the film's producers embraced the nuances and ambiguities which define the coming-of-age process for young Moroccans today.

As fascinating a glimpse as Amours Voilées offered into the struggles of contemporary Moroccan women, I still wonder how the film might have been different had it not been written, directed, and produced by a man. Such are the ironies of life in Morocco.

Sentenced to jail in 1997 as a university student aged 22, Yusuf is released on health grounds 10 years later. He returns to his village in the eastern Black Sea region, where he's welcomed only by his sick and elderly mother. It turns out that his father died while he was in jail and his older sister got married and moved away to the city. Economic factors mean that it's almost exclusively old people who live in the mountain village, and the only person Yusuf sees is his childhood friend Mikail. As autumn slowly gives way to winter, Yusuf goes with Mikail to a tavern where he meets Eka, a beautiful young Georgian hooker. Neither the timing nor circumstances are right for these two people from different worlds to be together. For all that, love becomes a final desperate attempt to grasp life and elude loneliness - for Yusuf at least. For Eka, Yusuf is something like a character from the pages of a Russian novel: a character who inhabits a faraway world and a faraway time. With the 1990s as a backdrop, the film at once documents and criticises a slice of recent history, exposing the irony, ruthlessness and reality of the period.

As our story begins, we have a demon, Saamri, who is being executed for killing and eating people, among other things, I guess, so his head is stored in a box in a palace (protected by a trident) and his body is buried behind an old temple. As we move forward into the future, we have a love story, of Sanjay and Suman, and Suman is of the family responsible for deposing this demon way back when, and it seems all the women of this family are cursed to die in childbirth. So, of course dad doesn't want his little girl to fall in love and suffer the same fate as her mother. But Suman seems to know something of this curse, and Sanjay and a couple friends (the macho Anand and his girlfriend) agree to go with them to this old palace and temple to see if they can banish the family curse. We get lots of cool road trip music too, as the gang rolls down the road in their Chevy Impala convertible, red, of course. There are some subplots and some cool musical numbers (yes, even in a horror movie) and all of it seems to work quite well, actually. Some of the comedy seemed a bit silly but apparently that segment of the film is lost on western audiences since it was a parody of a famous Indian movie that us westerners wouldn't have gotten. There's almost too much in this movie to describe and it all clocks in at a lengthy 145 minutes, wow. But, to its credit, it's never boring even if it does seem a bit incomprehensible at times. Of course, the evil demon is resurrected by greedy servants thinking they're getting an ancient treasure, and the battle is on with good vs. evil until the bitter end.

'Seethingly angry, brutal and breath-taking... combining soft-light cinematography with a grinding epic rock soundtrack to powerful ends.''

2001 Toronto International Film Festival Program

Aoi Haru (Blue Spring), the autobiographical short story collection by Manga artist Matsumoto Taiyo, is the latest from acclaimed young director Toyoda Toshiaki. His third film follows the award-winning crime thriller 'Pornostar', and last year's documentary 'Unchain'. Ryuhei Matsuda (the androgynous samurai in Oshima's 'Gohatto') plays Kujo, a master of the clapping game. To determine the class hierarchy the boys gather on the roof of the prison-like school to clap as many times as possible before falling from the precipice. The winner leads the gang and the loser falls. Kujo tires of the role of authoritarian despot as his interest in gardening blooms. But Aoki, his best friend (and disciple) rebels and their world is altered forever. A unique twist on 'Lord of The Files'.

An introspective study of a family's emotional problems in mist-wreathed Chongqing in central China, "Bliss" is hardly bathed in joy. (Original title means the much more apt "Floating Lives.") Debut 35mm feature by mainlander Sheng Zhimin, a former line producer for Hong Kong director Fruit Chan.

Retired cop Lao Li (He Xingquan) lives with his second wife Xiu'e (Guan Jiangge) and her grown son, delinquent Xiaolei (Xu Tao). Li's own son, cab driver Jianjun (Liao Zhong), has just married Xiaohong (Wang Lan), who's been laid off at work, straining their relationship. Then, Li's first wife's ashes come into his life, and he spends much of the film looking for a fitting site where he can bury them. Meanwhile, Li gets his stepson Xiaolei a job on the cross-river cable car, where the kid meets a pretty out-of-towner, Qian Xue (He Qin). Fashionably downbeat and loaded with anomie, pic captures the dank feel of the city but is otherwise a remote intellectual exercise.

Ishaan Awasthi is an eight-year-old whose world is filled with wonders that no one else seems to appreciate; colours, fish, dogs and kites are just not important in the world of adults, who are much more interested in things like homework, marks and neatness. And Ishaan just cannot seem to get anything right in class. When he gets into far more trouble than his parents can handle, he is packed off to a boarding school to 'be disciplined'. Things are no different at his new school, and Ishaan has to contend with the added trauma of separation from his family. One day a new art teacher bursts onto the scene, Ram Shankar Nikumbh, who infects the students with joy and optimism. He breaks all the rules of 'how things are done' by asking them to think, dream and imagine, and all the children respond with enthusiasm, all except Ishaan. Nikumbh soon realizes that Ishaan is very unhappy, and he sets out to discover why. With time, patience and care, he ultimately helps Ishaan find himself.

Synopsis

This excellent black drama is a must see despite its nearly three-hour running time, the movie is one of the most watchable and enjoyable pieces of art in Egyptian Cinema.

I had read the story before seeing the controversial movie, so I had expectations. But despite that, got hooked as early as the quality intro that takes you smoothly through an enjoyable ride to discover the background behind that nostalgic building in central Cairo through a Sepia short clip.

The film is an artistic black drama which is full of cultural and political symbolism if you read carefully between the lines, my interpretation is that the building is a clear symbol of the country itself and how it transformed dramatically from the nostalgic early days of the 40s till the present day, shedding light on the price that the Egyptian society had to pay during that rough trip, and how the society has clear double standards that everyone is trying to ignore.

Every side story evolves in a different direction and involves controversial characters who are linked only by the same building (society) in some way or the other, the different stories are interweaves in an artistic way to dramatise different controversial issues and taboos from adultery, political corruption, abortion, homosexuality and rape (on both male and female) to Islamic fundamentalism, drug taking and smuggling, student activism and the general decline in

The movie has a general sad feel around it especially for anyone who lived in Egypt as it touches on the deterioration and many negative issues that are becoming more and more the norm in most Egyptian society levels that was once a conservative and religious society. It is strong wakeup call to those who love their country to stop burying their heads in the sand when it comes to double standards that's affecting everyone in the society making everyone feel inferior to the country. The story will make you think deeply about how and why a country like Egypt could end up where it is today.

The cinematography, steady cams, crane camera movement is brilliant, the smooth cuts and soft transitions boosts the romantic dimension of the storyline. As expected, the music score by Khaled Hammad is expressive, romantic and adds a lot of depth to many scenes. The tempo of the movie is just right, giving enough time for actors to express their feelings through longer than usual shots that will never leave you bored. Action scenes are also very well done.

A must see piece of art for anyone who is living or used to live in Egypt, as well as those who are interested in its eternal themes, dealt with in a specifically Arab and Muslim context.

Santinho lives in a riverine community located in the northern Amazonas state. Upon being faced with a son's worst nightmare, he does something that takes his entire sect by complete surprise, and causes them to single him out as a glorified soul.

Santinho is a petulant young man, dressed in a gown of silk, inhabited by the spirit of a young girl who died twenty years earlier. While everyone is preparing for the annual celebration in memory of the girl, the atmosphere becomes explosive and passions are unleashed.

The ritual around this reincarnation gives the young man with ambiguous sexuality a central place in this isolated society at the heart of the Amazon rainforest.

Boogie Man: The Lee Atwater Story (2008) - Stefan Forbes

89 min | avi | 135Kbps | 624x352 | 23fps | 701MB | Color | English

IMDB

Review:
Boogie Man is about Lee Atwater, a blues-playing rogue whose rise from the South to Chairman of the GOP made him a political rock star. He mentored George W. Bush and Karl Rove while leading the Republican party to historic victories, helping make liberal a dirty word, and transforming the way America elects our Presidents. In interviews with Republicans and friends of Atwater, Boogie Man examines his role in America’s shift to the right. To Democrats offended by the 1988 Willie Horton controversy, Atwater was a remorseless political assassin dubbed by one Congresswoman “the most evil man in America.” The film examines his irreverent sense of humor, his understanding of the American heartland, and his unapologetic vision of politics as war. It ends with a portrait of a cynic's deathbed search for meaning.
